Kim was transplanted to the area from Kansas because of her love of water. (There is a shortage of it many years in Kansas.) She has been boating off and on since she was old enough to walk. In the 1990s she began scuba diving frequently and renewed her love of and desire to be on the water. Over several years she drug her daughter Rachel all over the United States while on vacations looking at boats until in 2005 they found and bought Salty Lady in Jeffersonville Indiana. They had never owned a large boat (their most recent boat having been a 19 foot bass boat) but had been preparing for this for years. So the day after they closed on the boat they headed off on their first solo cruise. They brought her down the Ohio River and up the Cumberland. After 4 long days of cruising and anchoring out on the Ohio River they finally ended up in Grand Rivers Kentucky. Rachel was glad to put on her swim suit and hit the pool after being the first mate through all those locks. Shortly after relocating the boat they joined the CYC and have gradually become more involved in the activities. After a year of commuting back and forth from Kansas they eventually relocated themselves to a small renovated cabin on Kentucky Lake so they could spend more time on the boat exploring the rivers. Kim hopes to one day throw off the lines for an extended period of time and explore the Great Loop including the Bahamas. Bev has been boating most of her life, but came into the sailing world with aHobie Cat in 1991 at Chickamauga Lake in Chattanooga, TN. Joe purchased their first sailboat a 27’ Chrysler back in 1995. Joe had prior sailing experience but Ann had never been on a sailboat nor ever thought about sailing or boating. After numerous “white knuckle” experiences for Ann and 3 sailboats later they are still at GTB sailing on Kentucky and Barkley lakes, together. They now spend most every weekend from March through October on their Hunter Passage, “Queen Ann”, (appropriately named). Queen Ann is located on Pier 4. They have been members of CYC since at least 1996. Their favorite activities at the lake include but are notlimited to: Happy Hour on Pier 4 every Friday night, visiting great friends at GTB, eating at the CYC, Dockers, attending CYC sponsored events and anchoring out on weekends at coves in the area. They have chartered boats out of Burnt Store Marina in Florida, sailed to Key West and sailed with friends in the Exuma’s. Enjoying each new adventure and learning more about the art of sailing. You will find David and his wife Janet Rittenhouse on pier 11 slip 1 aboard the DaJaRi II during much of the summer. As Professor of Computer Drafting Technology for Kaskaskia College career obligations result in much of the fall to spring spent in the classroom. Boating has been a part of our lives since 1986 with many hours of travel and skiing. As more leisure time became available, we began to visit the marinas, resorts and boat shows. Our conversation moved from ski boats to yachts. Barkley and Kentucky Lakes had long been favorite boating locations. We could anchor in a cove, walk the shoreline or cruise the waterways. We found good food, good accommodations and good friends.
Our friend, Tom Pape, gave some great leads and provided a positive insight about Green Turtle Bay Resort. The day we boarded the former “Special Lady” our interest grew the most and the 1986 Carver 4207 Aft Cabin was ours. Convenience of the pier was the primary consideration, but we quickly found that the friendly nature of the people at Kentucky and Barkley Lakes as well as GreenTurtle Bay Resort bring are what truly make the trips, the cost and the boating season worthy of our precious relaxation time. We have found that which we were seeking.
