MARCH 2017 CYC NAUTINEWS ARTICLE
Welcome to March and the beginning of the 2017 boating season for most of us!! No matter what Punxsutawney Phil, the weather prognosticating groundhog, has predicted, it looks like winter is over in most of the Midwest. The first day of Spring March 20. Hooray!!
The recently renovated Commonwealth Yacht Club opened on February 4, 2017 with the Mid Winter’s Blue’s party. If you have not visited the Yacht club you have to stop by and see how gorgeous the inside is. The annual Valentine’s party followed the Blue’s party on February 11. As always, this was much fun and enjoyed by all who attended. Everyone attending was treated to a delicious meal beginning with appetizer’s, followed by the main course and ended with a decadent chocolate cup strawberry short cake dessert. It was just so wonderful for my heart to be back at the lake and visit with everyone after a couple of long winter months.
Now let’s talk about some of the many events your Commonwealth Yacht Club and Green Turtle Bay Resort have scheduled in the next couple of months. You can actually view all 2017 events at cycgtb.com website. Check out the website to see what’s “Happening at the Bay”. If you are a member of the Commonwealth Yacht Club and have not joined the CYC website go to the website and request to be a member. Board member and web administrator, Chris Riley, will then get in touch with you.
The next CYC Board meeting is March 4, 2017 at 8:30am at the Commonwealth Yacht Club. Contact Commodore Jerry Koerner if you have any event suggestions.
CYC’s Irish event, the annual St. Patrick’s Day party, is March 18 with dinner and dancing. Entertainment will be provided by our own 37 Degree’s North. Wear your green or risk being “pinched”!! Remember everyone is ”Irish” on St. Patrick’s Day.
April is a busy month, starting with April 1 Board meeting at 8:30am. Commonwealth Yacht Club’s Easter Brunch is April 16 at the Commonwealth Yacht Club. Call Amber to make your reservations as the club fills up fast.
April 22 is the CYC’s annual Pirates Market held under the tent by the Chandlery from 9-12:00. To reserve a table email Short Range Fleet Captain Sally West or just show up with your treasures as there are always extra tables.
Green Turtle Bay’s Spring Boat Show is April 21-23. CYC’s Spring Sailing Series races begins on April 29. Meet Vice Commodore Sharla Graham on Kentucky Lake at 10:00am to participate in the racing.
No one should miss getting your boat blessed at the CYC annual Blessing of the Fleet on April 29 beginning at 10:00am with Brother Jack Larwa blessing each individual boat. Captain’s can receive a boat blessing by a water drive by at Pier 6 beside Emory & Suzy Pence’s boat or schedule to have your boat blessed in your slip. To schedule to have your boat blessed contact Short Range Fleet Captain Sally West or sign up on the sign up sheet at the Commonwealth Yacht Club. Blessing of the Fleet is an ancient maritime tradition that was first practiced as vessels left the harbor on their long fishing expeditions.
I also want to mention the CYC’s Flag Retirement Ceremony which will be on May 27 at Green Turtle Bay’s beach. Start gathering up your tattered and worn flags to be retired in a reverent ceremony on the beach. You can drop your flags off the Green Turtle Bay’s Chandlery or the Village Market at any time before May 27.
Hope to see everyone at the lake soon,
